The people of Chicago should be thanking the high heavens that the International Olympic Committee voted Chicago down as the 2016 host for the Olympic Games. Atlanta was one of the lucky few Olympic hosts to raise enough donater money to cover the costs of the Olympic Games, most of the time the city takes the hit. Or in other words, the taxpayer. Seeing as London is already bemoaning the fact that they won the 2012 games due to the economic crisis, and 80% of Chicagoans were against the city voting to insure the cost of the games, why would Chicago want to jump into the fervor? The only reason I can see is that corrupt Chicago leaders care more about getting their hands into the billions of dollars that would have flowed into the cities coffers, and less about sending their taxpayers to the poor house.

Jenna, the only people who would have blamed President Obama for losing the Olympics whould have been people from Chicago. Even then, a President or anyone for that matter should never make a decision to please people. Yes President Obama was pressured to speak, but telling news stations that the economy was a more pressing issue to be focused on than securing the Olympics would have gained people’s respect.

If President Obama declined to travel abroad to promote the Chicago bid, he surely would have been blamed for its failure. By lobbying for Chicago – and ultimately, the United States of America – Obama demonstrated a key tenant of the Olympics: i.e., pride for one’s country, as well as mutual respect and understanding between nations.
You make some interesting points. Though as someone who grew up in Illinois and now lives in Kansas, it would have been neat to see the Olympics out here in the Midwest
Amen, and Obama embarrassed the American people. He should have been fixing our Economy, not taking trips to Holland to dance and sing for the masses.
